Mean Spirited Monday

Every Monday morning I post a picture of some random celebrity, or non-celebrity for you to comment on. Remember to have fun and be mean spirited with your comments.

We held another stoop sale over the weekend. This one was a little more impromptu than the last, which is why I didn't mention it here last week. Usually when we hold a stoop sale, I like to set a goal for what I'm going to spend the money we make on. Sometimes that goal is just beer and booze. For the stoop sale we held a few weeks ago, the goal was to make enough money to buy a new printer/scanner/copier machine. We made enough and, as an informed consumer, I've been searching around for the best deal on this machine.

Last week I stepped into Staples and picked up the weekly circular to see the printer I've had my eye on prominently displayed on the front page and marked down $35! Sweet! Well of course they didn't have any in stock so I went to another location by my office to hear the same story. Finally, at a third Staples (all within a few blocks of where I work) the salesperson let me in on a little truth, Staples hasn't carried this model for a while and only use the ad to lure people in and then sucker them into buying the new model. From what I can tell, the new model does the exact same job as the last one but costs about $60 more.

Which brings me to this week's Mean Spirited Monday - Mass Market Stores. You might not have a Staples story of your own to bitch about so feel free to use the comments section to sound off on any of these giant shop-orama shit-shows. And remember, be mean spirited!

  1. Have you seen that documentary: "Wal-mart, the high cost of low prices"? Trust me, that corporation is truly evil...makes you really want to spend more $ at mom & pop shops.

    and staples smells funny.

  2. In California, we have choices. Such as Office Depot, should Staples be unable to fulfill our needs. And if not Office Depot, then we have Best Buy or possibly Circuit City, and then we inevitably end up at Costco, buying a new printer/scanner combo in addition to ten pound of frozen fish sticks and a giant bag of tortilla chips. You should move here.

  3. The other day my Dad was helping me put in some electrical stuff: new wall sconces. Anyway, we needed some wiring and some plastic box thingys. He insisted that we go to Home Depot and I said, "No, let's go to the local hardware store here. It's closer and worth a few extra bucks in convenience."

Well, you should always listen to your Pop cause he was right. They wanted like 2x the amount for everything! No wonder stores like these are being pushed out of business.

I made sure to say extra loud when we left "Let's just go to Home Depot Dad! These guys are too expensive. "

    I'm an ass.

  4. Evil!
I hate how Wal-Mart is trying to get in on all the green/organic big business, when you know they don't give a shit about the environment, they're just cashing in.

  5. Oh! Jeff! Another reason to move to LA. I went to an open house on my block this weekend with a friend to check it out. While I was there, two other people came to check out the house. One was Juliette Lewis and the other was Amazing Race winner Tyler, the former street kid/ druggie who became a model, of Tyler & James fame. Luv a good Amazing Race sighting.

  6. My favourite is when I get to go into Circuit City to buy some ridiculously overpriced electronic item from pimple faced teenagers that don't know shit about electronics and they won't wait on me because I'm not a university girl with short shorts on. Well, ok, I like that part of going in the store too, but still. I have money in my pocket, assholes.
